Two separate firing incidents at residence of Supreme Court's Justice Ijazul Ahsan


Two separate firing incidents were reported at the residence of Supreme Court Justice Ijazul Ahsan.

No casualties were reported in the attacks, one of which took place around 10:45pm on Saturday and the other at 9:10am on Sunday.

The judge's house is located very close to the residence of the Punjab chief minister and his son MNA Hamza Shahbaz, where there is visible police presence throughout the day.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Saqib Nisar arrived at the residence of his fellow judge after the incident and is overseeing the situation. He also summoned the Punjab police chief and ordered an investigation.

CM orders 'immediate arrests'

Rangers personnel reached the site after the incident as did Special Branch officials while a police investigation is underway.

According to reports by security forces, bullet casing of a 9mm pistol was found near the main gate of Justice Ahsan's residence last night while another was found near kitchen window in the morning.

Officials said the shell has been sent for forensic analysis, adding that they are also reviewing footage of CCTV cameras in the area.

Later in the day, the personal secretary to Sharif, however, was refused a meeting with the Supreme Court judge by the SC administration.

Condemnation

Following the incident, reports of condemnations poured in with the legal community announcing to wear black armbands in protest on Monday.

The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) and Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) condemned the firing incidents and demanded immediate arrest of the culprits.

Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has strongly condemned the incident of firing at the residence of Supreme Court judge, Justice Ijaz Ul Ahsan in Lahore.

He directed the authorities concerned at the federal and provincial level to bring the culprits to the task at the earliest. 

Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has taken notice of the incident and directed the Punjab inspector general to bring the culprits to book.

Pakistan Peoples Party co-chairperson Asif Zardari called for a high-level judicial probe into the incident.

PTI chief Imran Khan also "strongly condemned" the incidents, claiming that they were "tactics to pressurize senior judiciary".
