Accountability court indicts NBP chief, two others in Ishaq Dar corruption case
An accountability court in Islamabad indicted National Bank of Pakistan President Saeed Ahmed, Naeem Mehmood and Syed Mansoor Raza Rizvi on Thursday in the supplementary corruption reference filed against former finance minister Ishaq Dar.
The court's Judge Mohammad Bashir read out the charges against the accused. Following the charges were read aloud, all of the three accused present in the court pleaded not guilty.
The court of Judge Mohammad Bashir also summoned prosecution witnesses on April 11.
Saeed Ahmed informed the court that he has challenged his indictment in the Supreme Court. However, the judge observed that the proceedings will continue until the apex court rules otherwise.
On Wednesday, Ahmed had filed an appeal in the apex court pleading to declare the Islamabad High Court (IHC) judgment null and void in which he was declared guilty as co-accused in the supplementary reference against Ishaq Dar.
The reference
Former Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, a close aide of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Quaid Nawaz Sharif, is under trial for possessing assets disproportionate to his declared source of income.
In its reference against the former finance minister, NAB alleged, “the accused has acquired assets and pecuniary interests/resources in his own name and/or in the name of his dependents of an approximate amount of Rs831.678 million (approx)”.
The supplementary reference, based on seven volumes including account details of the accused, was filed by NAB after the apex court’s verdict in the Panama Papers case.
Dar was re-elected to the Senate earlier this year.
