Trump agrees to meet North Korea's leader by May this year
The US president said in his tweet,"Great progress being made but sanctions will remain until an agreement is reached."
Chief of the National Security Office Chung Eui-yong announced: “U.S. President Donald Trump said he would meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un by May this year.”Kim Jong Un talked about denuclearization with the South Korean Representatives, not just a freeze. Also, no missile testing by North Korea during this period of time. Great progress being made but sanctions will remain until an agreement is reached. Meeting being planned!— Donald J. Before the press briefing on Thursday, Chung held talks with President Trump at the White House and delivered to him a handwritten letter from the North Korean leader.
“I told President Trump that the North Korean leader said he is committed to denuclearization. Kim pledged that Pyongyang will refrain from any further nuclear or missile tests,” Chung said. “Kim also expressed his eagerness to meet President Trump as soon as possible.”
In response, President Trump said he would also like to meet Kim by May to achieve permanent denuclearization, the chief said.
Chung went on to say that, “The Republic of Korea, along with the U.S., Japan and our many partners around the world, remain fully and resolutely committed to the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.”
“Along with President Trump, we are optimistic about continuing a diplomatic process to test the possibility of a peaceful resolution. Korea, the U.S. and our partners stand together on insisting that we will not repeat the mistakes of the past and that pressure will continue until North Korea matches its words with concrete action.”
