Sanjrani, Mandviwalla win as Chairman, Deputy Chairman Senate

PPP, PTI and MQM-P backed candidate from Balochistan, Sadiq Sanjrani has been elected Chairman Senate of Pakistan. PPP's nominted Saleem Mandviwala was elected as depty chairman.

Sanjrani managed 57 votes out of a total 103, while Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)’s candidate Raja Zafarul Haq bagged 46 votes.

According to reports, Sanjrani also had the support of independent senators elected from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA).

The ruling party nominated Raja Zafarul Haq for Senate chairman and Usman Kakar for deputy chairman. However, the ruling party, despite having majority party in the upper house, failed to secure required votes. The upper house consists of 104 members and at a candidate requires least 53 votes to win.

Chairman Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf congratulated Sanjrani in his tweet.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardar, PPP's chairman in his tweet said Balochistan wins, Federalism wins.
Maryam Nawaz, daughter of the ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif, crticised PPP's co-chairman Asif Zardari and PTI's chief Imran Khan.
