MQM-P leader attempts suicide, admitted to hospital
Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan’s provincial lawmaker Shazia Farooq reportedly tried to commit suicide on Monday night after allegedly swallowing a large quantity of sleeping pills.
However, the Medical Superintendentof Abbasi Shaheed Hospital said that Shazia Farooq didn't attempt to commit suicide. Her condition deteriorated as she was under severe depression.
According to media reports, the legislator was under severe depression as she has been criticized widely with selling her vote in favor of a PPP-backed candidate in the recently held Senate elections. Ms Farooq and her family denied the charge of selling her vote.
Soon after the suicide bid, Shazia was rushed to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where she was reported to be out of danger. MQM-P leadership also arrived at hospital to inquire her health.
According to Shazia’s son, she had not tried to commit suicide, however, her health deteriorated owing to mental stress. ‘My mother is now out of danger’ confirmed the son. Shazia's father held MQM-P leader Farooq Sattar responsible for the incident.
Shazia is supposed to be among the party’s six members of provincial assembly of the Sindh Assembly who voted for the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), defying the party line.
MQM-P chief Farooq Sattar had claimed that other than Shazia, five party members namely Naila Muneer, Heer Soho, Sameeta Afzal, Saleem Bandhani and Naheed Begum were served show-cause notices for violating party orders.
