ECP extends polling time to ensure maximum participation

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Friday extended polling time by an hour for the upcoming general elections.

In a notification issued on Friday, the ECP said voting would start at 8 am and end at 6 pm. The decision was taken by the electoral body to ensure maximum participation by voters.

Sources said this is the first time the polling duration has been extended across the board in the country's electoral history.

Interestingly, the ECP rejected Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) request to extend polling time for the upcoming elections on Wednesday.

ECP to display final list of candidates tomorrow

Candidates have until today to withdraw their candidature and the ECP has set June 30 as the last day for the allotment of election symbols.

The ECP stated that the final list of candidates will be displayed at the offices of the returning officers and district returning officers tomorrow.

Earlier this week, the commission approved, in bulk, postings and transfers of bureaucrats in Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan.

The postings have been carried out ahead of the next month’s elections in an attempt to eliminate the chances of these officials exerting any influence in favor of or against any candidate or party.

Moreover, the electoral body asserted that candidates will have a total of 23 days to hold their campaigns, as all campaigning will seize on the night of July 23.

The elections are scheduled to be held on July 25, 2018.
