ECP recommends July 25 to 27 for general elections 2018

Election Commission of Pakistan

Election Commission of Pakistan has sent a summary to the President to fix the date for the next general elections.

According to a statement issued by the ECP on Monday, the commission has recommended the President Mamnoon Hussain to fix date between 25th July to 27th July for the next general elections.

Earlier, the commission had said it will decide the date for the upcoming general elections after mutual consultation with all stakeholders.
The ECP spokesperson claimed that there was no reason to keep the date of the elections secret, and the ECP would reveal the date after it held consultations with all stakeholders.
“The date and schedule of elections is not something to hide,” the ECP spokesman Altaf Hussain maintained.
The incumbent government is expected to conclude its five-year term on May 31, after which the caretaker government will take over to oversee the general elections.

As per constitution of the country, the prime minister for the interim government would be appointed with the mutual agreement of the Prime Minister and the leader of the opposition.

In case, both the leaders did not reach on mutual agreement, the matter will be sent to the parliamentary committee which will announce the name with consensus. If it fails to reach on consensus, the name of the interim government's prime minister will then be decided by the Election Commission of Pakistan.

The prime responsibility of the interim government is to hold fair and impartial elections in a transparent manner.
