Supreme Court verdict: Nawaz,Tareen disqualified for life


Supreme Court of Pakistan announced that a politician who is declared disqualified under constitution’s article 62(1)F will remain disqualified for life.

Following the verdict, ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf’s former general secretary Jahangir Tareen will stand disqualified for life.

The five member bench headed by the Chief Justice Mian Saquib Nisar announced its judgment unanimously. The member of the bench were Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed, Justice Umar Ata Bandial, Justice Ijazul Ahsan and Justice Sajjad Ali Shah. The court reserved the verdict in all 13 appeals against the disqualification of lawmakers.

The case pertained to determine the period of disqualification of a politician under article 62(1)f of the constitution.

The article 62(1)f of the constitutions says: “Qualifications for membership of Majlis-e-Shoora (Parliament): A person shall not be qualified to be elected or chosen as a member of Majlis-e-Shoora (Parliament) unless- (f) he is sagacious, righteous and non-profligate, honest and ameen, there being no declaration to the contrary by a court of law.

On February 14, the apex court had reserved its verdict in the case regarding duration of the disqualification of the members of the parliament incurred under Article 62(1)(f) of the Constitution. The verdict was reserved after Attorney General Ashtar Ausaf completed his arguments.
