Missiles fired by US & allies aiming at Syrian targets downed: Russian Defense Ministry

Missiles fired by the US and its allies were downed by the Syrian Air Defense System provided by Russia, the Russian Defense ministry claimed.

"Syrian air defense systems S-125, S-200, Buk, and Kvadrat were involved in the operation to thwart the missile strike. These air defense systems were manufactured in the Soviet Union more than 30 years ago," the ministry said.

Russian news agency Tass quoted the Russian Defense Ministry as saying, ""Over 100 cruise and air-to-surface missiles have been fired at military and civilian targets in Syria by US, British and French ships."

Earlier, the US PresidentTrump addressed the nation to announce a combined operation- with the United Kingdom and France- of precision strikes against sites associated with the chemical weapons capabilities of the Assad regime in Syria.

Russian reaction

Actions by the United States and its allies in Syria would entail consequences for which they would have to bear responsibility, Russia’s ambassador in Washington Anatoly Antonov said in a statement immediately after the first strikes on Syria.
"The worst expectations have materialized. Our warnings fell on deaf ears. A pre-planned scenario is being acted on. We are being threatened again," he stated.
"We have warned that such actions will not remain without consequences. All responsibility for them rests upon Washington, London and Paris," he said.

Antonov stressed that "insulting the Russian president was inadmissible."

"The United States, a country that has the largest arsenal of chemical weapons, has no moral right to accuse other countries," he said.
