Supreme Court halts EC to issue notification to four senators-elect with dual nationality
Supreme Court on Monday ordered Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to halt victory notification of four newly elected senators for allegedly having dual nationality.
Chief Justice Saqib Nisar noted that the victorious candidates holding dual nationalities were elected in the recent elections of the Upper House. While hearing another case of dual citizenship, CJP said that he was unaware of their names.
After the Attorney General Ashtar Ausaf Ali informed the apex court, SC halted the notification of Sadia Abbasi, Haroon Akhtar, Nuzhat Sadiq and Chaudhry Sarwar for holding dual nationality.
Sarwar belongs to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) while the other three are from the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).
Supreme Court has issued notices to four candidates for clarifying their positions regarding the issue.
Later the ECP said that some of them had already submitted their affidavits to the commission and had given up to their dual nationality.
SC said that the victorious candidates with dual nationalities have to appear before the court and clear their records.
